Understanding 5-Year Sprinkler Inspections and Pipe Corrosion

This presentation provides and in-depth look at the NFPA 25 requirements for 5-year fire sprinkler inspection, testing and maintenance activities. Specific emphasis will be given to the required internal piping assessment and how this is different from other requirements for when an internal obstruction invention is needed. The presenter will discuss the scope of work required for conducting a piping assessment and obstruction investigation along with the typical methods for completing these tasks. In addition, participants will review 5-year requirements in NFPA 25 for other aspects of the fire sprinkler system such as gauges, sprinklers, water supply flow testing, tanks, alarm/pre-action/deluge check valves, strainers/filters/orifices, and pressure reducing valves.

Learning Objectives:
•Explain the difference between an internal piping assessment and an obstruction investigation.
•Recognize the various triggers that mandate conducting an obstruction investigation.
•Learn the minimum number of specific locations required for conducting an internal assessment of the piping.
•Understand the full scope of the 5-year mandated requirements of NFPA 25 related to fire sprinkler systems.
