Managing System Impairments and Use of Fire Watch

This course will cover the necessary actions to effectively manage fire protection system impairments including the use of fire watch. The presenter will provide an explanation of how both an emergency and preplanned impairment is defined by the various codes and standards. Examples will be included to illustrate the range of conditions that might fall within the bounds of the definition with follow-up discussion on the need for reasonable judgement when developing the appropriate measures for managing the impairment. The presentation will then cover the required actions which must be completed as a result of an impairment including notifications, tagging, corrective action and the implementation of required compensatory measures.

• Explain the definition of an emergency and preplanned impairment as provided by NFPA 1, NFPA 25, NFPA 72 and the International Fire Code
• Know the impairment responsibilities of each of the stakeholders involved
• Learn the need for using appropriate judgement in defining a condition as an impairment as well as the selection of appropriate compensatory measures
• Understand the responsibilities and necessary approval for use of a fire watch as part of managing of an impairment
