Fire Alarm System Design in Health Care Facilities

Fire alarm systems in health care facilities have additional requirements that designers need to be familiar with. This course will discuss these design requirements for health care occupancies based on NFPA 99 ‘Health Care Facilities Code’ and other applicable codes such as the International Building Code (IBC), NFPA 70 ‘National Electrical Code’, NFPA 72 ‘National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code’, and NFPA 101 ‘Life Safety Code’. The presenter will cover fire safety plans that include ‘defend in place’ strategies and how this impacts the fire alarm system design.

Learning Objectives:
•Understand the required sections of NFPA 99 and NFPA 101 for health care occupancy design parameters
•Learn the applicable sections of IBC and IFC for fire alarm systems in health care facilities
•Identify the specific fire alarm requirements that are triggered by the use of ‘defend in place’ strategies
