Emergency Communications Systems Requirements

NFPA 72 ‘National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code’ Chapter 24 covers the requirements for the installation and performance of Emergency Communications Systems (ECS) for in-building fire emergency voice/alarm communications systems and other communications systems. Participants will learn the commonly used notification systems covered including one-way evacuation focused audio systems, two-way voice-based systems and mass communication systems. Specific applications will be discussed including communication for stairways, elevators and areas of refuge. This presentation will emphasize the design requirements for these systems and recent changes to NFPA 72 directly impacting their use.

Learning Objectives:
•Understand which audio systems are within the scope of NFPA 72 Chapter 24
•Learn the importance of the Risk Evaluation when determining appropriate emergency communication systems
•Determine when emergency communication wiring needs to be survivable
•Explain the types of voice-based ECS systems typically installed in modern buildings
