Commodity Classifications for Fire Sprinkler Design

This course will explore the important and necessary effort to determine the appropriate commodity classification for a stored item. This will include a review of the actual definitions for each commodity presented in NFPA 13 ‘Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems’ along with consideration of potential variations that might exist with both FM 8-1 and the IFC. The application of the definitions will be discussed along with key limitations and the use of the associated Annex materials for appropriate commodity classification. A variety of examples will be provided to illustrate the process of classification including the use of intermediate-scale testing.

•Understand what elements make up the commodity being classified
•Utilize the available Annex materials in the determination of commodity classifications
