Understanding Seismic Bracing for Fire Sprinkler Systems (Part 1)

This webinar provides an understanding of seismic bracing to protect fire sprinkler piping in areas subject to earthquakes and is based on ‘NFPA 13 Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems’. The presentation will discuss how to determine when seismic bracing is required as well as provide an understanding of the design objectives for seismic bracing including flexibility, clearance and restraint. Participants will examine the use, location and installation requirements of components such as flexible couplings, seismic separation assemblies, and sway bracing. Sprinkler piping clearance requirements will also be covered for penetrations to the wall, floor, foundation and structure. Finally, pipe loads that must be included in the Zone of Influence (ZOI) and determining vertical seismic load will be reviewed. (Also see Part 2 of this training course Using Seismic Bracing.)

Learning Objectives:
•Describe the design objectives of seismic bracing
•Explain how to determine when seismic bracing is required
•Understand use requirements for common components
•Review pipe loads impacting the Zone of Influence (ZOI)
